Esmil Group has successfully completed another project, which involved the supply and commissioning of a multi-disc screw dewatering unit of the MDQ series at a wastewater treatment plant in Covington, Ohio. The proposed solution fully met the customer’s needs, and the results obtained once again confirmed the efficiency and high performance of Esmil’s innovative sludge dewatering technologies.
Introduction
The Covington wastewater treatment plant recently underwent a major upgrade to improve sludge treatment efficiency. With the growing need for more efficient dewatering of aerobically treated activated sludge, the facility sought a solution that would not only meet current operational challenges but also be adaptable to future changes. In collaboration with Esmil, the facility implemented a multi-disc screw dehydrator, a state-of-the-art sludge dewatering technology designed to meet both current and future performance requirements. This provided reliability, efficiency, and flexibility, ensuring the sustainability of the treatment process for many years to come.
Esmil Solution
Esmil specialists, anticipating a possible increase in the capacity of the treatment plants in the future, initially recommended the MDQ-401 multi-disc screw dehydrator model as the optimal solution for sludge dewatering. However, taking into account the prospect of further expansion of the OS, the Esmil group included the possibility of installing an additional drum, which led to the evolution of the configuration to the MDQ-402(1) CLD model. Thanks to this forward-looking approach, all the necessary electrical and mechanical components were integrated in advance, which will allow for easy and seamless modernization of the system if necessary. The result? A perfectly thought-out solution that meets both current and future operational challenges.
Equipment installed at the facility

Productivity
After a successful start-up, the system quickly reached the planned capacity of 6.8 m³/h, demonstrating an outstanding result of over 100 kg of dry solids/h in the dewatered sludge. The dry matter content of the dewatered sludge not only exceeded the client’s minimum requirements, but also significantly exceeded the target indicators, confirming the exceptional efficiency and reliability of the technology.
